The Netherlands is to give nearly one million euros in extra emergency aid to Burkina Faso and Chad. The announcement was made by Development Co-operation Minister Ben Knapen.
The amount is on top of the four million euros made available to the Sahel region of Africa at the beginning of March. Countries in the Sahel have been hit by drought which has resulted in famine. International agencies are warning of the threat of a humanitarian disaster.
On Wednesday, a majority of MPs called on the government to give more aid to the Sahel. The International Red Cross is pleased with the extra money made available, but points out that it is only a fraction of what’s needed to save lives. The United Nations says over a million children under the age of five face malnutrition this summer.
