Dutchbat commander may face prosecution

More about:

Former commander of Dutchbat troops in Srebrenica, Thom Karremans, may be prosecuted.

According to the Dutch public broadcaster NOS, the National Reflection Committee has advised prosecutors to bring charges against Colonel Karremans.  For years, there has been speculation he could be brought before a court to answer for the massacre at Srebrenica in 1995.

Relatives of the victims of the Srebrenica massacre filed charges against Karremans in July 2010. The Public Prosecution Service asked the Nation Reflection Committee to advise on whether the prosecution should go ahead. The committee has now decided that prosecution is appropriate in this case, although this does not mean prosecutors have to follow the advice.

Srebrenica fell in the summer of 1995. Dutch peacekeepers were assigned to protect the UN enclave, they were not able to prevent the 2,000 heavily-armed Serbs from killing between seven and eight thousand Muslim men and boys.
